Micro-needling
Collagen induction therapy, also known as micro-needling, dermarolling, or skin needling, is a cosmetic procedure that involves repeatedly puncturing the skin with tiny, sterile needles. The tiny, hair-thin needles of the medical pen used for treatment makes microscopic injuries in your skin. These injuries aren’t enough to hurt you, but they are enough to signal to your body to institute its repair and rejuvenation forces and send them to the skin of your face. As soon as the deepest layers of your skin are penetrated by the needles, “micro-wounds” are created. This triggers your body’s wound healing processes to heal your micro wounds immediately. Over the next few weeks, your body will repair your epidermis, making it thicker. It will also build the extracellular matrix, giving your facial skin a firmer foundation to sit on. You’ll also notice new, fresh skin replacing places where you have sun damage, acne scars, or hyperpigmentation. As this happens, your wrinkles and fine lines will soften and you’ll look years younger. However, the most dramatic results will not be visible until four to six weeks after treatment.
The FDA Defines 2 Types of Micro-needling: Medical & Cosmetic. Medical micro-needling is done in a doctor’s office and goes deeper than cosmetic needling. It is done at a depth of greater than 0.3 mm and can only be done by a licensed medical provider.
- Reduction of facial wrinkles/aging skin.
- Reduce pore size
- Reduce/remove brown spots from sun damage or melasma
- Improves dry or oily facial skin.
- Improve dark circles under the eye
- Diminish acne scarring and stretch mark, and rosacea
Most people need between three and six treatments to see their final results. For younger people, one to two treatments are often enough. It all depends on your body’s unique cellular turnover rate, your age, and how you’ve treated your skin in the past.
Microneedling typically requires nine months of treatment. During this time, you’ll need three to six treatments spaced out every two to six weeks to see full results. The exact number of treatments and the time between them will vary by type, location, and skin concern.
Skin needling is best delivered in a course of 4 to 6 sessions. A minimum of 4-6 sessions is required for skin rejuvenation and 6-8 sessions for pitted acne scarring. However, more may be needed for more sun damaged and aggressively scarred skins.

The effects of a microneedling pen are not permanent, so clinicians recommend a maintenance program that could include quarterly procedures to keep skin looking it’s best.
